From Agra, drive through Orchha — a largely unvisited medieval town on the Betwa River whose cenotaphs, palaces, and 17th-century temples make it one of the most evocative heritage sites in all of Madhya Pradesh. Stay overnight in this quiet gem before continuing to Khajuraho.
Khajuraho's UNESCO-listed temples — built between 950 and 1050 CE by the Chandela dynasty — are among the most extraordinary architectural achievements in the world. Their intricate erotic and devotional sculptures celebrate life, love, and divinity with a frankness and artistry unique in human history. The western group of temples at sunset is particularly magical.
The tour concludes in Varanasi — one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth and the spiritual heart of Hinduism. Rise early for the Taj Mahal at dawn — the most iconic view in India. After breakfast and checkout, drive south to Orchha (4–5 hours). This largely unvisited medieval town on the Betwa River is one of India's best-kept secrets: riverside cenotaphs of the Bundela kings, a magnificent hilltop fort, the Ram Raja Temple (the only temple in India where Rama is worshipped as a king), and the elegant Jahangir Mahal palace. Stay overnight in the peaceful ambiance of this hidden heritage gem.
Drive from Orchha to Khajuraho (about 2.5 hours) through the Bundelkhand plateau. Arrive and check in. The Western Group of Khajuraho temples — the finest and best-preserved — are visited in the afternoon when the sculptural detail is most vivid in the angled light. The Kandariya Mahadeva temple, with its 31-metre shikhara and over 900 sculptures, is the most celebrated. Evening: the Sound and Light show projected onto the Western Group temples is a spectacular introduction to the Chandela dynasty's extraordinary achievement.
Morning: the Eastern and Southern temple groups — smaller and less visited, but containing some of Khajuraho's finest Jain temples. The Khajuraho Museum houses the sculptures and artefacts found during excavation. Afternoon flight to Varanasi. Arrive in time for the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat — a fire ritual that has been performed without interruption for centuries, watched by thousands of pilgrims and travellers from the ghats and the boats on the river.
Rise before dawn for a boat ride on the Ganges — the most remarkable morning in Indian travel. Glide past the ancient ghats as priests perform morning pujas and pilgrims take their sacred baths. Explore the narrow lanes of the old city — Kashi Vishwanath Temple's golden spires, ancient dharamshalas, and the constant sounds of bells, chanting, and the sacred river.
Afternoon: drive to Sarnath (12 km) — the deer park where the Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The Dhamek Stupa, the Ashoka Pillar, and the excellent Archaeological Museum make this one of Buddhism's most sacred sites.
A final morning walk along the ghats — Varanasi at dawn is extraordinary even on the last day. Transfer to Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport for your departure flight. The tour concludes in Varanasi, or connect via Delhi for your international connection.

Khajuraho's temples are UNESCO World Heritage Sites celebrated for their extraordinary artistic achievement — some of the finest stone carving in the world. While approximately 10% of the sculptures depict erotic scenes (Kama Sutra imagery), these are part of a larger devotional and cosmological programme; the temples are principally places of worship dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and the Jain Tirthankaras. The content is appropriate for adults and older teenagers. We recommend visitors read about the symbolism beforehand to fully appreciate what they are seeing.
The most convenient connection is the daily flight from Khajuraho Airport to Varanasi (approximately 1 hour). We arrange this in advance and include airport transfers on both ends. An alternative is the overnight train from Jhansi (closest major railhead, 180 km from Khajuraho) to Varanasi — a first-class sleeper journey through the night, arriving fresh in the morning.
