History of Jaipur
With grand existence at just 262 Kms from Delhi, the Pink City, as it is widely called, amuses everyone with grand forts, palaces and with a huge fleet of architectural marvels. Many claim the city was consolidated by Sawai Jai Singh n 1727 though many historians argue that settlement dates back to early centuries. From Muhal emperor Humayun to Aurangzeb, Rajput rulers of Jaipur had formed a close and cross bond with Mughals and this is reflected in its erstwhile architecture as well. Not surprisingly, but such a rich thick architectural treasure cannot be developed and built within a span of a few decades and initiative, it is said, was taken by Raja Bihar Mal. He formed friendly alliances with Mughals and maintained an army comprising 5000 Rajput warriors for emperor Humayun. Later his son, Mughal emperor Akbar married Raja Bihar Mal’s daughter and the couple was blessed with a son, who went on to become Emperor Jahangir. Besides, Man Singh, who was grandson of Raja Bihar Mal, was given a highest position in Mughal court and was included among the 9 gems.
Emperor Jahangir later married the daughter of Rajput Ruper Bhagwan Das and the event contributed to the cementing of Mughal-Rajput relations and the tradition of rewards, awards, recognition and social and architectural formation continued till the time of Emperor Aurangeb who later hailed Raja Jai Singh with the title “Sawai” meaning one plus a quarter in Hindi-Urdu, owing to his sharp and unparallel intellect. In Jaipur, the flag bears an image of extra quarter atop City palace which signifies Raja Jai Singh’s prowess, even today.
Raja “Sawai” Jai Singh had closely analyzed European architecture at length and inspired from it, he devised a mega city plan while the credit for open-air observatories in Delhi, Jaipur, Ujjain and Varanasi goes squarely to him. While planning city and its possible futuristic virtues and utilities, he formed a large team of eminent mathematicians and astronomers and thus also took Shilpa Sastra, which is traditional Hindu architectural philosophy, into his consideration.
